The Draft

I believe that there should never be a forced draft in the United States ever again. No one should be forced to kill other over something they do not believe to be right. I know that you could work as a medic or a communications specialist, or some other duty that does not require you to kill another human being, but it is still forced labor. It is a form of slavery. I support the military, and the men and women who put there lives on the line every day. Honestly, I cannot fight for our country in the military. I have too many health problems, and I am a Swiss citizen. I would love to defend my country against any danger, threat, or injustice, but it would have to be my view that it was for a just cause. The draft is a forced game of chance, the options are to return safely, wounded physically or emotionally, or not to return at all. The draft in the past, especially in Vietnam, has been very unpopular. A government that has the power to send involuntary young men to a game of chance with death in my opinion has too much power. Economic and educational incentives bring in countless volunteers for the military. The Constitution says that Congress has the power to raise an army, but does not say that it must force people to join it. Thankfully, the draft has not been issued in a while, however, I feel that in order to ensure that it does not come back, a law must be made that enables people to choose not to join it.

  1. Oh man, I so agree. I'm not really sure I could be drafted actually....due to my terrible feet, but in principle I agree. To me life is the most precious thing you have and being forced to gamble on that is not bueno. I have a hard time supporting the military to be honest. I respect it....but I'm also an extreme pacifist. Ehh killing, dying, war...I don't like them. It's far too sad and tragic and over stupid things.

  2. Okay, I'm not really sure of my opinion on the draft. I want to think that our country would never require the draft. That there would always be people who would willingly fight to uphold the ideals of our country. However, that's in self defense, I'm sure that the number of volunteers would drastically fall if we needed people to fight in some other country. And that is alright, in all reality, we shouldn't be fighting in some other country unless they attacked us. From what I know, I don't think we had any business in Vietnam. However, if our government does send troops to some other country, and they need more troops, should people back up our country because we love it? should they support the government no matter what? No, thats stupid. I think what I am trying to say is that my opinions on the military are not completely consistent, but I agree with most everything you just said.

  3. I agree Harrison. Life is precious, and we should have the choice on how to live it. No one should be obligated to risk this gift, or forced to destroy that of another. I have no problem however, if the soldier believes in what he or she and the rest of the country is fighting for.

  4. I agree Ben, I don't think we had any business in Vietnam, and because of it, thousands of guys not much older than us were forced to threaten their lives. If we are attacked, then I feel there would be no shortage of volunteers. Thank you.
